BEGINNING

In 2021, Nathan's advocacy journey truly began. He found it difficult to witness advocacy being conducted in a negative manner, realising the significant delay in building trust and making an impact on those outside of the community. Nathan firmly believes in the power of patience, support, and positivity in advocacy, recognising that these qualities can have a lasting effect.

In 2019, Nathan initiated a conversation with the Executive Producer of "Neighbours" about creating a deaf character, aligning with the show's current theme of "Everybody is welcomed on Ramsay St." He pointed out there is no representation of disability on the show ever, and after discussions, Nathan and the producers reached an agreement to collaborate. This collaboration resulted in Nathan working on the set of Ramsay St in 2020, portraying a recurring deaf character named Curtis Perkins, including having a deaf consultant on board when he uses Auslan. After this success, Nathan has played another two deaf roles on a upcoming feature film which will be released at Hoyts and on BONDS TVC.

Over time, Nathan became a strong advocate for authentic storytelling in scripts and characters, insisting on accurate representation on Australian Screens. This isn’t an easy task, as some productions in the industry do lack exposure to disability representation, placing pressure on Nathan to both advocate for himself and ensure his characters are portrayed authentically.

DEaf enough

When the Deaf actor joined the Deaf/Hard of hearing community, he felt welcomed with open arms and guidance and a profound of support that it helped him become who he is today. Though, there were moments that Nathan Borg had found barriers within others who did not accept him due to not being native or elite enough which Nathan had found that was reasoning of deaf and hard of hearing gap. He believes in fixing that gap by creating a side business called “Deaf Enough” which began as a theatre and merchandise related.

The whole purpose of Deaf Enough means it doesn’t matter the identity or background, language or speaking skills, they are deaf enough. We are all equal whether the person is in the community or not. You can follow Deaf Enough on Instagram.
