BEGINNING
The Deaf actor began his acting career with theatre at the age of 16, which presented great challenges from day one. At 19, his first musical gig was in “Hairspray” with a community theatre company, where he performed as part of the ensemble, playing the role of Sketch. Encouraged by this success, he auditioned for “Grease”, making it to the final rounds for the role of Sonny. However, he was rejected due to the producer's ableism towards Nathan's ability. This experience shattered Nathan's confidence and led him to step away from musical theatre, focusing instead on film/TV, which offered more accessibility. However, his love for musicals always reignites when he sees deaf actors performing in musicals in America and the UK, so he hopes to have the one life time opportunity in Australia.

understand the process of professional theatre
In 2022, Nathan was lucky to be invited by Sissy Screens to perform a playful spin on fan fiction at the SMUT R18+ solo show. Nathan’s spin story was on about Toy Story 3 but changing it to Gay Story 69 which was held at The Wheeler Centre. He also was honoured in 2023, to be invited by The Australian Ballet to act in one of the productions “Don Quixote” at the Arts Centre Melbourne which he took the opportunity to understand the process of professional theatre but also the accessibility behind the scenes and front on.

goal is to remove barriers
In Australia, Nathan finds barriers in the Australian productions as they don’t accept deaf actors often on stage with roles in speaking or sign language. Frustrated by this lack of opportunity, Nathan decided to take matters into his own hands and created his own stage shows. Teaming up with another Deaf artist, Sam Martin, they formed a partnership to create deaf theatre. Their first show, “Deaf Enough”, was a success, selling out all 300 seats at the Melbourne Fringe Festival in 2023. They followed this with another production titled “Bump Into You” at the Midsumma Festival in 2024.
